As Doğa Derneği, in collaboration with our partner in France, the research institute Tour du Valat, which focuses on the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands, we conducted a “Wetland Restoration Training” in İzmir from 23 to 26 June 2025.

The training was organised within the framework of the project “Capacity building of civil society in the South, Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean for sustainable wetlands management” supported by the French Development Agency (AFD). The project aims to strengthen the technical, managerial, and organisational capacities of 15 civil society organisations across 11 countries, thereby enhancing the effectiveness in the conservation and management of wetlands throughout the region.

12 civil society organisations from the Mediterranean basin participated in the training. The programme addressed key approaches to wetland restoration, technical methodologies, relevant policies, international standards and management models. Participants exchanged knowledge and experiences regarding planning, implementation, and stakeholder engagement through interactive sessions and scenario-based group work.

In addition to presentations on restoration projects from various countries, Doğa Derneği shared its ongoing restoration and monitoring activities in the Gediz Delta through both presentations and field visits.

During two days of field visits in the Gediz Delta, participants had the opportunity to observe pasture restoration, biodiversity-compatible management of pastures, the ecological impacts of eucalyptus trees, and biodiversity monitoring techniques firsthand.

This training represents a significant component of the broader collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing wetland conservation and management across the Mediterranean region. We remain committed to strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing practical outcomes through the exchange of experience and knowledge for the protection and restoration of wetlands.
